Set a different temperature in every room.
One outdoor unit instead of several.
Only the rooms in use are heated or cooled.
Combine wall, cassette or ducted indoor units.
How multi-split air conditioning works
A multi-split system links two or more indoor units to one outdoor condenser. Each indoor unit has its own controls, so a bedroom can be kept cool while a home office or lounge runs at a different temperature – or is switched off entirely. Because only occupied rooms are conditioned, multi-split systems are an efficient way to serve several spaces.
Indoor units can be mixed to suit each room: wall-mounted units for bedrooms, a ceiling cassette for an open-plan kitchen, or a discreet ducted unit for a lounge.
Multi-split vs single-split
| Single-split | Multi-split | |
|---|---|---|
| Rooms served | One | Several |
| Outdoor units | One per room | One for all rooms |
| Independent control | Yes | Yes, per room |
| Best for | Single rooms, simple projects | Multi-room homes and offices |
If you only need one or two rooms, a single-split system can be more cost-effective. We'll always recommend the option that genuinely suits your property.
Ideal for homes and businesses
- Homes – bedrooms, home offices and living spaces, each at the right temperature.
- Offices – meeting rooms, private offices and open-plan areas with different heat loads.
- Clinics, salons and gyms – treatment rooms and studios with individual control.
- Properties with limited outdoor space – flats, terraces and listed buildings where fewer outdoor units are preferred.
Installation timescales and aftercare
Most multi-split installations take one to two days depending on the number of indoor units and pipe routes. We commission every unit, demonstrate the controls and register your manufacturer warranty. Annual servicing keeps every indoor unit clean, efficient and covered.
Choosing an indoor unit for each room
Wall-mounted units for bedrooms
Slim, quiet and affordable – the default choice for sleeping spaces.
Ceiling cassettes for open-plan areas
Four-way airflow suits large kitchen-diners and office floors.
Concealed ducted units for living rooms
Hidden in a ceiling void with just a grille visible, for rooms where looks matter most.
Floor consoles for conservatories
Low-level units for rooms with lots of glass and little wall space.
Is a multi-split cheaper than several single splits?
Not always. A multi-split saves on outdoor units, wall penetrations and external space, but the outdoor unit itself is larger and pipe runs can be longer. For two rooms on opposite sides of a house, two single split systems may cost less and offer more resilience. We price both options so you can compare.
